Stephen W. Thomas

Mr. Thomas represents buyers, sellers, and owners of real estate, as well as real estate brokers and agents. He provides transactional advice and counsel to these clients, and as necessary, representation in litigation, arbitration and mediation proceedings, including administrative actions before governmental agencies such as the California Bureau of Real Estate.

He began his career in real estate law shortly after receiving his J. D. degree from the Golden Gate School of Law in San Francisco, when he was hired as Staff Counsel for the State of California Department of Real Estate, now known as the Bureau of Real Estate. In that position, he investigated and prosecuted violations of the real estate law, which included assignments involving widespread violations of mortgage lending practices and in the marketing and sale of recreational properties throughout the state of California.

After leaving State service, Mr. Thomas associated with Gagen McCoy where he practiced as a partner for almost fifteen years, representing clients in real estate and construction matters. One of his primary clients was a large residential brokerage operation, Coldwell Banker, which offered him the position of in house Corporate Counsel for northern California.  He thereafter spent approximately fourteen years with Coldwell Banker. During that time, he provided advice and counsel to the Company and staff, had primary responsibility for commercial transaction issues, as well as licensing-related issues, and represented the Company and its officers, employees, and agents in a variety of litigation, pre-litigation, arbitration and mediation actions.

Mr. Thomas has recently rejoined Gagen McCoy and provides an experienced resource in virtually all real estate matters, whether complex or simple.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and resides in Walnut Creek with his wife. He is a long time resident of Contra Costa County, and he and his wife have family throughout the Bay Area.

Mr. Thomas is a member of the Real Property and Litigation sections for both the State Bar and the Contra Costa Bar Association. He has written several articles and has made presentations to real estate industry groups.
